The "Animal" is a man called Dainin Sheanais who, in a fit of desperation, jumped off a cliff 30 years ago, when his fiancé fell in love with someone else. In secret, he spies on the others, never showing himself voluntarily. He is not even sure if they can see him, but under no circumstances does he want to risk giving them a scare. And thus the residents on this nameless island just off Ireland's west coast are fighting over whether this creature even exists and how long this strange haunting has already been going on.
