Martin Walser
Martin Walser was born in Wasserburg on Lake Constance. He studied literature, history, and philosophy at the University of Regensburg and the University of Tübingen and completed a doctorate in literature in 1951. His oeuvre includes a large body of novels, plays, essay and poetry collections. Some of his fiction has been translated into English, including his first novel Ehen in Philippsburg (Marriage in Philippsburg), published in 1957, and his most important work, Ein fliehendes Pferd (Runaway Horse), published 1978, which was both a commercial and critical success. Walser has been the recipient of many prizes, awards, and honorary doctorates, among them the Georg Büchner Prize, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
