Three distinct Irish writers, Louise Kennedy, Alan Murrin and Micheál Ó Conghaile, present recent work to their German readers. Moderated by Professor Dr Gesa Stedman of the Centre for British Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, this conversation will explore their individual artistic preoccupations and perspectives and what connects their work to Ireland.

Louise Kennedy
Louise Kennedy grew up in Holywood, Co. Down. Her short story collection, The End of the World is a Cul de Sac (Bloomsbury/ Riverhead US 2021) won the John McGahern Prize. Her debut novel, Trespasses (Bloomsbury/ Riverhead US 2022) won Eason's Novel of the Year at the An Post Irish Book Awards and Book of the Year: Debut Fiction at the British Book Awards and was shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction, the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize and Barnes and Noble Discover Prize. Before she started writing, she spent nearly thirty years working as a chef. She lives in Sligo.
Alan Murrin
Alan Murrin is an Irish writer based in Berlin. His short story, “The Wake,” won the 2021 Bournemouth Writing Prize and was shortlisted for short story of the year at the Irish Book Awards. The Coast Road was shortlisted for the PFD Queer Fiction prize. Murrin is also the recipient of an Irish Arts Council Agility Award and an Arts Council Literature Bursary. He is a graduate of the prose fiction masters at the University of East Anglia, and writes for the Irish Times and the Times Literary Supplement, as well as Art Review and e-flux.
Micheál Ó Conghaile
Micheál Ó Conghaile, is a native Irish language speaker born in Connemara.In 1985 he founded the publishing company Cló Iar-Chonnachta which has since become one of the leading Irish-language book publishers. A respected writer, his accolades include The Butler Literary Award (1997) and the Hennessy Literary and Irish Writer of the Year Awards (1997). Elected to Aosdána in 1998, he was a writer in residence at Queen’s University and the University of Ulster (1999-2002). His novel and several of his short story collections are available in English translation. Micheál Ó Conghaile is a member of Aosdána.
