Naoise Dolan, Ferdia Lennon & Audrey Magee: Voices from the Island

Event in Berlin, Thursday 21 March, 2024, at the Colosseum Theatre.

How does coming from an island on the edge of Europe influence the work of these three writers? Do islands have a natural place in Irish writing? Moderator Magda Birkmann speaks to Naoise Dolan, Ferdia Lennon and Audrey Magee about finding the universal in the particular.

• Naoise Dolan’s Das glückliche Paar (The Happy Couple), translated by Anke Caroline Burger, will be published by Rowohlt in April 2024.
•  Ferdia Lennon’s Glorreiche Taten (Glorious Exploits), translated by Thomas Überhoff, was published by Rowohlt in February 2024.
• Audrey Magee’s Das Habitat (The Colony), translated by Nicole Seifert, will be published by Verlagsgruppe HarperCollins Deutschland in May 2024.

Naoise Dolan was born in Dublin, Ireland. She writes fiction, essays, criticism and features for publications including The London Review of Books, the Guardian and Vogue. Naoise’s debut novel Exciting Times (Aufregende Zeiten) was first published by W&N and became a Sunday Times bestseller. She has been shortlisted and longlisted for several prizes, including the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Dylan Thomas Prize. Naoise’s second novel, The Happy Couple, was published in 2023, and she is currently based in Berlin.

Ferdia Lennon was born in Dublin to an Irish mother and a Libyan father. His short stories have appeared in publications such as the Irish Times and The Stinging Fly. In 2019 and 2021, he received Literature Bursary Awards from the Arts Council of Ireland. Glorious Exploits, his debut novel, was first published in January 2024 by Fig Tree in the UK.

Audrey Magee worked for twelve years as a journalist and has written for, among others, The Times, The Irish Times, the Observer and the Guardian. Her first novel, The Undertaking, was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, for the Festival du Premier Roman in France and for the Irish Book Awards. The Undertaking has been translated into ten languages and is being adapted for film. Audrey’s second novel, The Colony, was first published by Faber & Faber in 2022 and was longlisted for the Booker Prize.
