Astrid Huisman is the 2025 Translator in Residence at the University of Galway, a partnership between Literature Ireland and the University. Astrid translated Sinéad Gleeson’s essay collection Constellations: Reflections from Life (Hemellichamen: Spiegelingen uit het leven, Uitgeverij HetMoet), and is currently translating her debut novel Hagstone.

Sinéad Gleeson
Sinéad Gleeson’s essay collection Constellations: Reflections from Life won Non-Fiction Book of the Year at the Irish Book Awards, the Dalkey Literary Award for Emerging Writer and was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Michel Déon Prize. She is the editor of the award-winning anthologies The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers and The Glass Shore, as well as The Art of The Glimpse: 100 Irish Short Stories. In 2022, she co-edited This Woman’s Work: Essays on Music with Kim Gordon. Sinéad also collaborates with artists and musicians on performance and sound installations. Her work has been translated into several languages and her debut novel Hagstone was published in 2024 by 4th Estate.

Astrid Huisman is a freelance Dutch translator and editor specialising in contemporary English-language literary fiction, non-fiction and poetry. She is the 2025 Translator in Residence at the University of Galway, a partnership between the University of Galway and Literature Ireland. She has translated works by award-winning authors such as Eve Babitz, Evie Wyld, Deborah Levy, Patti Smith, Sinéad Gleeson, and Elaine Feeney. As a dedicated mentor, Astrid is happy to share her knowledge, passion and expertise with emerging literary translators, focusing on inclusion and empowerment. She's currently exploring creative writing and podcasting, and also works as a social entrepreneur organising community-building events.
