Zoli

Colum McCann

Based on a true story, Colum McCann's fourth novel is an incredibly rich story about betrayal and redemption, and storytelling in all its guises. It begins in Czechoslovakia in the early 1930s when Zoli and her grandfather head off in search of a new Gypsy camp after the fascist Hlinka guards have drowned the rest of their family. Against Roma tradition, Zoli teaches herself to read and write and secretly writes down some of her songs. After the war, Zoli meets Stephen Swann, a man she will have a passionate affair with and who will persuade her to publish some of her work. But when the government try to use Zoli to help them in their plan to 'settle' gypsies, her community turns against her and casts her out. Thus begins another journey in search of a new home and a new life for Zoli.
