The seven stories of this collection are united by their setting, the fictional County Mayo town of Glanbeigh. In this familiar small-town setting a collection of flawed but compelling characters struggle through their lives. While their story tend to be gloomy ones, Barrett's colourful language and dark wit give vitality and energy to each narrative. In one story, a recovering addict returns to the town that was his home; in another, two friends are holed up in a pub during the funeral of the woman who they both loved. In each story, sharp dialogue and precise, memorable description of the small town setting - the pubs, the coastline, the concrete picnic area - display Colin Barrett's considerable literary talents to the full.
