A co-founder of the Irish Literary Theatre in 1899, Yeats became one of the directors of the Abbey Theatre, which opeded its gates in 1904. His play Cathleen Ní Houlihan was performed on the opening night on 27th December with Maud Gonne in the leading role. Yeats attended the Abbey a last time in 1938 when his last play, Purgatory, premiered.
