In Tribe, Montague extends Irish poetry into the realm of the naturalist, the zoologist, and the geneticist and questions our relationship with the natural environment. While the sequence "Hambletonian, Rubbing Down" is based on works by the horse painter George Stubbs, other poems in the collection chart encounters with squirrel, fox and raven, whale, wolf and gannet, prompting fellow Irish poet Eva Bourke to proclaim the volume a "Song of Songs" for man's animal brothers and sisters.
