The Steward of Christendom
Sebastian Barry
The Steward of Christendom premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, on 30 March 1995. Set in a county home in County Wicklow in 1932, it chronicles the journey of Thomas Dunne to true freedom, many years after he rejected the freedom granted to the Irish Free State. Confined and bereft of his family, the last Chief Superintendent of the Dublin Metropolitan Police in 1922 looks back on his life, surrounded by the memories of his three daughters and son Willie, who died in the First World War.
