A one-act play, The Shadow of the Glen was the first of Synge’s plays to be staged in 1903. A passing Tramp begs shelter from the wet night at the door of an isolated cottage "at the head of a long glen in County Wicklow". His host, Nora Burke, is tending to the corpse of her husband Dan. Nora begs to be excused in order to call over a young neighbouring sheep farmer, Michael Dara. Once she is gone, Dan Burke suddenly sits up, revealing to the Tramp his suspicions which led him to feign death. When Nora returns with Michael, he resumes his pretence and overhears Michael hatching plans for Dan's legacy and Nora's thoughts. An involuntary sneeze ends his game, and Dan rises to banish his wife from the house. The Tramp takes up her cause, soothing her with fine words to win her over to a life on the road. They leave together, the pair behind complimenting each other over whiskey.
