Based on a scandal that gripped Victorian Britain in the 1860s, The Sealed Letter is Donoghue’s sixth novel and won the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction. It is the third book, after Slammerkin and Life Mask, in which the author investigates the British class system by reworking the life stories of historical female figures. The women at the centre of this novel are Helen, wife of Vice-Admiral Henry Codrington and recently returned to London, and her erstwhile friend Emily “Fido” Faithfull, a spinster and pioneer in the women’s movement. Fido’s loyal effort to help her unhappily married friend escape the constraints of wedlock unexpectedly culminates in an intriguing courtroom drama complete with accusations of adultery, counter-claims of cruelty and attempted rape, and the appearance of a mysterious “sealed letter” that could destroy more than one life.
