The School for Scandal

Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Sheridan's comedy of manners was first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre in London, in May of 1777. Full of satirical wit, Sheridan's masterpiece subverts the Georgian social mores of its day with subtlety and charm, exposing high society's hypocrisy, backstabbing tactics and fashion victims. The play opens with Lady Sneerwell and her partner in crime, Snake, plotting how to separate the lovers Charles Surface and Maria, the ward of Sir Peter Teazle. They are aided in this intrigue by Charles's brother, Joseph, who despite his hypocritical character enjoys an excellent reputation in society. Lady Sneerwell's scheming seems to pay off, as Sir Peter Teazle is taken in by Joseph while falling for the gossip that has linked his wife's name with that of a seemingly disreputable Charles. The true nature of the characters and the full extent of the intrigue are revealed when the uncle of Charles and Joseph, Sir Oliver Surface, unexpectedly returns from Australia.
