Co-authored with Gaelic League founder Douglas Hyde, The Poorhouse was first staged by the Abbey Theatre on 2 April 1907. A One Act play, it is set in a poorhouse where the two bed-bound peasants, Colum and Paudeen, amuse themselves with verbal banter and mock pillow fights. When Colum is asked to return home with his sister, a recent widow, he hesitates, unsure if life will be better with her and unwilling to go without Paudeen. As his sister is unprepared to take both men in, they decide to stay where they are and to continue their squabble.
