Centred on the doomed world of Danielstown, The Last September is a sharply perceived comedy of manners set in the time of the Irish War of Independence. At the beginning of the novel, the ambushes and burnings seem far removed up at the Big House where they are preoccupied by the tennis parties and dances, not to mention flirtations with British officers from the local garrison. In the calm and opulent sunlight of September, however, the 'open and empty country' surrounding Danielstown has crept through its gates and is menacing the foundations of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy.
