James Stephens' first-hand account of the Easter Rising, The Insurrection in Dublin, is essential reading today, more than 100 years after the rebellion. Stephens was a novelist and poet closely associated with leaders of the Rising and members of the Irish Literary Revival. He worked in the National Gallery of Ireland from 1915 to 1925, and the Gallery is currently holding an exhibition on Stephens' book, with portraits and artworks linked to it. One of Stephens' closest friends, Thomas MacDonagh, was executed on May 3, 1916 for his role in the Rising.
