Published in 1888, this collection contains modern fairy tales of a pleasure-seeking prince, a selfish giant, a great sacrifice, an exploitative friend, and a very important rocket. In the title story, a swallow who was left behind after his entire flock migrated for the winter meets the statue of the late "Happy Prince". In real life, the Happy Prince never experienced true happiness and from his vantage point overlooking the town, he is saddened to see that many people are suffering and poor. He asks the swallow to take the jewels that embellish his monument and give them to those in need. These acts of selflessness, however, exhaust the faithful swallow and when winter comes, he is too weak to survive. Already stripped of all exterior beauty, the Happy Prince's lead heart breaks and all that is left in the place where the monument once proudly stood are his broken heart and the dead swallow.
