'The Decay Of Lying - An Observation' is an essay by Oscar Wilde, published in the 1891 collection Intentions. The 'Intentions' essay was a revised version of an article that first appeared in an issue of The Nineteenth Century, in January 1889. The essay is presented as a Socratic dialogue between the characters of Vivian and Cyril. Their conversation promotes Wilde's view of Romanticism over Realism, with Vivian defending Aestheticism, and the notion of "Art for Art's Sake". The conversation, while including serious debate, is also humorous and whimsical in nature.
