The Absolutist

John Boyne

In 1919, three years after his time as a soldier began, 20-year-old Tristan Sadler travels from London to Norwich to deliver the letters of a dead comrade to his sister. She wants answers, and Tristan wants release from a secret that burdens him.

During training in Aldershot, Tristan had become friends with Will Bancroft. The intensity of their bond brought Tristan happiness and self-discovery, but the exposure to death, fear and suffering in the trenches in France changed each young man irreparably. Disgusted with the slaughter, Will became an absolutist, refusing to have anything to do with the war effort, and for this he was shot as a traitor. Even after the war, Will's sister Marian has to hide her grief in a town that considers her brother a feather man who shamed his family.
