The Absentee
Set in rural Ireland and London society in the early 18th century,
The Absentee is a fierce attack on the evils of absentee landownership and the wrongs that spring from it. Lord Colambre, the young heir to substantial Irish estates, travels to Ireland incognito and uncovers a terrible trail of indifference, injustice and embezzlement which he resolves to rectify. Fortified by his love for his cousin Grace, he sets out to convince his parents to abandon their much ridiculed attempts at gaining access into London's high society and to look after their estate in Ireland.
