Last Poems

William Butler Yeats

Published posthumously, Yeats's last collection of poems was accompanied by two plays, The Death of Cuchulain and Purgatory. The poems in it are both a forceful testament to his countrymen and an exploration of the metamorphosis of the soul. Yeats's abdication ends with Politics, a poem in which we see the golden bird, which had just before sung the violent end of civilisation, take flight into spheres that dare leave the imperatives of the day behind and to 'beget' a whole new generation of images inspired by beauty.
