Ghost Estate

William Wall

Wall's third collection of poems takes its title from the vast unfinished estates of houses built during the Celtic Tiger and now eerily empty, a metaphor for an Ireland rapidly emptying of its people in the latest great wave of emigration. In the face of this catastrophe, as Wall says in the very first poem in the collection, 'silence is not enough / love is not enough'. By turns angry and light-hearted, the poems explore themes of politics, desire, excess, fear, love, loss and flight – themes with powerful resonance after Ireland’s disastrous economic crash.
