Da: A Comedy in Two Acts
Hugh Leonard
The story revolves around the living memories of Charlie, a grown man who returns home to Ireland after the death of his father only to find the old man’s presence still very much alive in his childhood home and mind. As the events of Charlie's youth and Da's troubled relationship with Mother are replayed, we discover the darkly comic, bittersweet relationship that existed between father and son.
Da premiered at the Olney Theatre, Maryland, in the United States in August 1973. A revised edition was published in 1978, and the play is currently available from Methuen Drama, republished to coincide with the revival of the play at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in July 2002.
