Claire Kilroy's third novel is set in Dublin in the mid-1980s, at the height of a recession and a heroin epidemic. Narrated by Declan, the only boy of a tight-knit writing group at Trinity College, it tells of the group's fascination with the formidably talented but troubled writer Glynn, their teacher, and the darkly exhilarating journey this leads them on. Taking his cue from famous Irish novels and songs quoted in the individual chapter titles, Declan paints an atmospheric, often comic, portrait of the shifting group dynamic and of the frequently thwarted pursuit of creative life.
