A security correspondent for RTE, he has covered major crimes in the Republic, the Troubles in the North in the early years, and the Irish/UN in Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus, Syria, Egypt, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Kosovo. McCaughren's two other books for the young adult market, In Search of the Liberty Tree and Ride a Pale Horse, are based on events that occurred duing the 1798 rebellion of the United Irishmen. McCaughren has also written five adventure stories for children: The Legend of the Golden Key, The Legend of the Phantom Highwayman, The Legend of the Corrib King, The Silent Sea and The Children of the Forge. His 'fox series' became an international bestseller with young and adult readers alike. The series comprises six books: Run with the Wind, Run to Earth, Run Swift Run Free, Run to the Ark, Run to the Wild Wood and Run for Cover, the last one dealing with the current topic of cloning. The first three of these books are in the Top 100 books of all time in Ireland and have been translated into many languages, among them Korean. McCaughren has received several awards for literature, including The White Ravens from the International Youth Library in Munich, the Reading Association of Ireland Award, the Bisto/Children's Book Trust Books of the Decade Award and the Oscar Wilde Society Literary Recognition Award.
